We need to take the Emmy nominations, released on July 12, with a thick grain of salt. There are so many politics wrapped up in the yearly prestigious awards, from aggressive marketing budgets placed toward For Your Consideration campaigns to celebrity pull and viral success over, at times, talent. There’s also the television academy’s obsession with recognizing “within party lines,” so to speak, by continually nominated and awarding shows they deem Emmy darlings (looking at you, Handmaid’s Tale). They’ll never award a slate as diverse and representative of the TV landscape as the TV Scholar Awards (shameless plug!).
