On every 15th of the month, I share my thoughts on the handful of new shows I’ve been watching in the last month. Read to the end for a list of shows I’m keeping my eye out for in the next month, too. For full access, consider becoming a paid subscriber if you haven’t already.

Euphoria 2.01

I'm not sure about you, but my television watching has been more scattered lately than ever. It might have to do with my move to Vancouver, feeling the strange in-between of belonging to a new city and adjusting to daily living here. But I have a feeling it has more to do with the pandemic surge, bringing us back to where we were before. It feels relentless.

I would say 75% of my friends are sick or have recently been sick with COVID, and if we're not sick we're overwhelmed by that gnawing pandemic anxiety. We're burnt out. It doesn't surprise me that most folks I know are watching Emily in Paris and Search Party over anything more meaty (Yellowjackets, meaty enough for you?).

Shows that require a certain presence and awareness have been that much harder to tune into—it’s an active viewing skill that has slipped through my fingers as of late, replaced by screen exhaustion. All I want to watch is the Yellowjackets girls running through the woods and howling, or the various dance parties on Dickinson.

And yet here we are, pushing through our responsibilities day by day. It might just mean it takes me longer than usual to watch a 6-episode miniseries, and maybe that's okay. My monthly capsule reviews can be found below the fold. Stay safe y’all…

Assume everyone who has survived this far into a global pandemic is exhausted on some level. Can you decrease output more? Can you lay off requesting things and unnecessary calls and emails? Can you take a nap? Can you put your phone on DND? Just generally move slower.
