reflections #8: The Boyfriend
How Netflix's moving gay reality show became my new therapy.
Reporting live from Sundance! I have already seen some things that are under embargo and I have lots on the docket, including episodic premieres like Bait and The Screener. I’ll round-up everything I’ve watched in my newsletter next week.
Some other places I’ve been lately:
I made an appearance on Vox’s Explain it to Me podcast talking about Heated Rivalry and sex on television.
I picked The Night Manager for my Appointment Viewing column in The Cut.
I interviewed Ned Brower aka Nurse Jesse from The Pitt, who is actually a nurse in real life! For Yahoo.
On Thursday night, after two palomas (Dry January is officially over), I walked through some poorly lit roads in Park City, Utah, on my way back to my hotel room after a press welcome party and a Dorian Awards voter meet-up ahead of the official start of the Sundance Film Festival. I got back to my room at a reasonable hour—I’m trying this thing where I actually prioritize my sleep for the next week, instead of whatever I did at TIFF leading up to catching a flu on my last couple of days.
What I really, desperately wanted to do was curl up alone in my comically large hotel bed to watch more of Netflix’s Japanese-language series The Boyfriend, which is probably Netflix’s best reality offering—and maybe one of their best shows overall? And shed a few tears.
