I say this every year: We must take the Emmy nominations with a grain of salt. They’re not the TV Scholar Awards, after all. They don’t come close to capturing the actual reality of quality television programming. If that were the case, My Brilliant Friend would sweep every category, and we wouldn’t be stuck with categories filled with nominations from 1 or 2 shows. But every year, the minor categories are where some of the more surprising nods are located — like Say Nothing receiving a writing nod for limited series, or Fantasmas being nominated alongside American Idol for hairstyling (a result from submitting it as a variety series, which is somehow the most Fantasmas outcome possible).
Aside from The Residence and What We Do in the Shadows, I have watched every show nominated for the main categories (by main, I mean awarded at the live televised broadcast on September 14 – and marked by the 🏅 emoji below). But I watched a whole lot of the below-the-line nominees too, adding up to a whopping 44 shows I’ve ranked in order of preference. Due to limited space in an email, I can’t actually write about each one, but I’ve linked to reviews and newsletter blurbs I’ve written over the last year.
I would obviously add some snubs to your list too, like Industry and My Brilliant Friend, but I hope this ranking gives you a decent place to start.
